Mykola Azarov: Official biography


Prime Minister of Ukraine (since 11 March 2010). Member of the Party of Regions. Former Vice Prime Minister/Acting PM, and the Minister of Finance in Viktor Yanukovych governments (2002-2005, 2006).

Family and childhood:
Born on 17 December 1947 in Kaluga, Russia. Father – Yan PAKHLO (1924), mother – Kateryna KVASNIKOVA (1927).
Married, wife – Ludmyla AZAROVA, son Oleksiy (1971).

Education and Academic background:
Graduated from the Moscow State University, specialization – geologist-geoscientists.

PHD in Geological and Mineralogical Sciences (1986), Professor (1991), Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1997).

Languages spoken:
Russian (native), Ukrainian.

Work Experience and Political Life:
1971 – 1976 – Section Manager, Chief Engineer at the “TulaMineDrying”, Tula, Russia.
1976 – 1984 – Laboratory Chief, Head of Department at the Moscow-area Scientific Research and Project-Designing Coal Institute.
1984 – moved to Ukraine for permanent residence.
1984 – 1995 – Deputy Director, Director of Ukrainian State Scientific Research and Project-Designing Institute of Mining Technology, Geomechanics, and Mine Surveying, Donetsk, Ukraine.
1994 – 1998 – Member of Parliament of Ukraine, Head of the Budget Committee.
1995 – 1998 – Member of the Currency and Credit Regulation Council of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
1997 – Member of the Supreme Economy Council of the President of Ukraine.
1996 – 2002 – Head of the State Tax Administration of Ukraine.
March-June 2001, 2003 – Head of the Party of Regions.
November 2002 – February 2005 – First Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, Minister of Finance of Ukraine.
December 2004 – January 2005 (since times of Orange Revolution) – acting Prime Minister of Ukraine.
